About the city of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk, located on the Volga River, is known for its scenic landscapes, historic streets, and 19th-century architecture. Often referred to as the “City of Seven Winds,” it has over 626,000 residents and features the widest stretch of the Volga at 40 kilometers. A UNESCO Creative City of Literature since 2015, Ulyanovsk celebrates notable figures like writer Ivan Goncharov and poet Nikolay Yazykov. The city hosts vibrant literary events, including the Slovo Festival and Litera-Tour tram tours, while its writers engage in global projects such as poetry residencies. Recent initiatives include digitizing libraries and launching an international writers’ residency. In 2023, Ulyanovsk celebrated World Poetry Day by sharing poetry in seven languages and hosted “The Colors of Childhood Inspiration” art festival, connecting children across five countries.
