About the city of Popayán

Situated in Southwestern Colombia, Popayán serves as the capital of the Cauca department, covering over 512 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,760 meters. Known as “The White City” for its stunning colonial architecture, Popayán suffered damage from a devastating earthquake in 1983. With a rich cultural heritage, it has nurtured renowned poets, painters, and 17 Colombian presidents, and is recognized as a “University City” due to the prestigious Universidad del Cauca. In 2005, Popayán became the first city designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, with the Popayán Gastronomic Corporation promoting gastronomy as a catalyst for sustainable urban development. The annual Popayán Gastronomic Congress unites professionals from diverse culinary backgrounds for discussions and presentations, showcasing the city’s commitment to cultural and culinary innovation while fostering global connections.
