About the city of Launceston

Launceston, located in northern Tasmania, Australia, is situated at the confluence of the North Esk and South Esk rivers, forming the Tamar River (kanamaluka). With a population of 87,645 (2021), it is the second most populous city in Tasmania and ranks as the fourth-largest inland city in Australia. Established by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities, known for its historic buildings and charming architecture. Named after Launceston in Cornwall, it boasts significant historical achievements, such as being the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to use anesthetic, the first with underground sewers, and the first lit by hydroelectricity. The city enjoys a maritime climate with four distinct seasons, making it notably warmer than the southern parts of the island during summer. Launceston has become one of the most livable regional cities in Australia, attracting residents from 2020 to 2021.
