Gabrovo is one of Bulgaria’s leading economic and industrial centers and the birthplace of modern factory production, dating back over 150 years. In the late 19th century, it earned the nickname “the Bulgarian Manchester” due to its rapid growth in crafts and trade. Gabrovo takes pride in its cultural heritage, featuring nine cultural institutions, thirty-seven community cultural clubs, and various NGOs dedicated to crafts and folk art. Its cultural calendar is packed with over twenty international events and more than two hundred arts-related activities each year. The city maintains partnerships with thirteen sister cities and has an integrated urban development plan to enhance cultural infrastructure. Gabrovo’s cultural strategy, from 2014 to 2024, emphasizes the role of culture in fostering sustainable growth while leveraging its rich folklore and crafts within the UNESCO Creative Cities network.
