Breads of the Creative Cities Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey

In September 2022, during the visit to Istanbul, UNESCO Creative City of Design, within the context of the Breads of the Creative Cities Meeting, the Creative Knowledge Foundation visited two local bakeries—Papatya Cafe and Bakery and Halk Ekmek Bread Factory—.

During the meeting, a certificate was presented to the bakers in recognition of their significant contributions to the region. Both bakeries have strong connections to the local community, sourcing grains from local suppliers and farms around Istanbul. By supporting small farmers and millers, they play a vital role in preserving Creative Knowledge and fostering local economic growth.

Breads of the Creative Cities, the first inter-cluster project of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, launched in 2018 by the Creative Knowledge Foundation in partnership with Tucson UCC, celebrates the diversity of local staple foods through bread as a symbol of cultural identity. It showcases stories, traditions, and practices from Creative Cities worldwide, giving voice to bakers, millers, and farmers.
